How to Access Amarhost Shared Hosting via SSH using PuTTY

While most shared hosting tasks are done through a web interface, sometimes you need SSH (Secure Shell) access for advanced commands, managing files, or running scripts. This guide explains how to connect your Amarhost Shared Hosting account to PuTTY.

Phase 1: Locating Your Hosting SSH Details

Unlike a VPS, shared hosting uses your specific account credentials. You will need:

  1. Server IP or Hostname: Found in your “Account Information” email or the Amarhost dashboard.
  2. SSH Port: Amarhost often uses port 22, but check your hosting welcome email for any custom port requirements.
  3. Username: Your hosting account (cPanel) username.
  4. Password: Your hosting account (cPanel) password.

Steps in Amarhost Client Area:

  1. Log in to the Amarhost Client Area.
  2. Go to Services > My Services.
  3. Select your Shared Hosting plan.
  4. Look for the Primary IP under the “Product Details” or “Hosting Information” section.
  5. Note: Ensure SSH access is enabled for your account. If you cannot connect, you may need to open a support ticket to request SSH shell access activation, as it is sometimes disabled by default on shared servers for security.

Phase 2: Setting Up the Connection in PuTTY

  1. Open PuTTY: Launch the application on your Windows computer.
  2. Enter Host Details:
    • Host Name (or IP address): Enter your server’s IP address or your domain name.
    • Port: Enter 22.
  3. Connection Type: Select SSH.
  4. Save for Later: * Type “Amarhost Shared” in the Saved Sessions box.
    • Click Save.
  5. Launch: Click Open. If a security alert pops up regarding a “Host Key,” click Yes to trust the server.

Phase 3: Logging In to the Shell

Once the terminal window (black screen) opens:

  1. login as: Type your Hosting/cPanel Username and press Enter.
  2. Password: Type your Hosting Password.
    • Note: To protect your security, the cursor will not move or show any characters while you type the password. Type it accurately and press Enter.

If successful, you will see a command prompt like [username@server ~]$. You are now logged into your shared hosting environment via SSH.

Important Notes for Shared Hosting Users

  • No Root Access: On shared hosting, you do not have “root” privileges. You can only manage files and processes within your own home directory.
  • Restricted Commands: Some system-wide commands are restricted to prevent users from affecting others on the same server.
  • Connection Denied: If you receive a “Connection Refused” or “Access Denied” error immediately, it usually means SSH access is not enabled for your specific hosting package. Contact Amarhost support to verify if your plan supports SSH.
